OUR MERIT SHOP PHILOSOPHY

As one of the region's largest and most successful merit shop contractors, we hire the most qualified and competitively priced subcontractors for our projects, regardless of union or non-union affiliation. In our nearly 50 years of experience, we have found this merit shop approach to be the most effective for our company and our clients.

Several organized construction unions have attempted to pressure KCC to sign an exclusive union labor agreement. We believe these exclusive agreements limit competition among subcontractors offering bids on our projects. Such an agreement would eliminate bids from nearly 75 percent of the available subcontractors. Exclusive agreements can also increase the market price for subcontractor services, restrict the available workforce, and can inhibit our ability to meet our clients' small- and minority-owned business utilization goals.

Our reputation as a construction manager of choice has allowed us to successfully bid on a variety of projects. We recognize the importance of having an all-inclusive selection process when soliciting bids from subcontractors for our projects.

This is turn helps increase employment opportunities for all subcontractors, regardless of union affiliation. KCC actively encourages all qualified subcontractors to bid on our projects, and our project labor force routinely reflects a mix of union and non-union workers. When our clients designate a project exclusively for union subcontractors, KCC honors that designation.
